브라이언 와일드스미스(1930~)는 존 버닝햄과 찰스 키핑과 더불어 영국 현대 그림책 3대 작가의 한 사람으로 손꼽힌다. 이들은 저마다의 독특한 화풍을 구축하여 60년대 이후에 활동한 일러스트레이터들에게 지대한 영향을 끼쳤는데, 와일드스미스는 현란하리만치 화려하고 다채로운 색상을 자유 자재로 구사하여 “색채의 마술사”로 불린다. 와일드스미스는 영국 페니스톤에서 광부의 아들로 태어나, 열여섯 살 때에 화가가 되기로 결심하고서 반슬레이 미술 학교를 다녔다. 그는 옥스포드 출판사의 편집자 메이블 조지에게 발탁되어 만든 처녀작 《브라이언 와일드스미스의 ABC》로 영국 최고 그림책상인 케이트 그린어웨이상을 수상하면서 화려하게 데뷔했다. 지금도 활발하게 활동하고 있는 그의 그림책은 전세계에서 8백만 부가 넘게 팔려나갔다.
