클레어 터레이 뉴베리(1903~1970)는 미국 출신이다. 고양이를 무척 사랑하여, 고양이의 익살스러운 행동과 포즈를 주제로 많은 작품을 남겼다. 그녀의 작품은 은근한 유머와 솔직한 대화, 간단한 구성이 특징이다. 칼데콧 아너 상을 네 번이나 받았는데, 그 중 <에이프릴의 고양이>는 1940년 수상 작품이다.
