Pigs from A to Z updates the traditional alphabet book in a potentially useful way. Rather than the usual presentation of a picture illustrating each letter, Arthur Geisert (Pa"s Balloon and Other Pig Tales offers intricate etchings depicting pigs engaged in assorted pursuits. In each picture, several examples of the letter are cunningly hidden among the whorls of artwork. This gives readers the opportunity to interact with the bookto actually learn about the letter"s shape by looking for it. The black-and-gray tones add to this book"s eccentric appeal the clever doings are humorously underplayed by the text"s dry wit.

미국의 어린이책에서 아서 가이서트의 ‘돼지’는 굉장히 유명합니다. 혹자는 작가가 어린 시절에 돼지와 함께 자란 것이 아닌가, 하고 궁금해할 수도 있겠지만, 아이러니컬하게도 작가는 어릴 적에 단 한 번도 돼지를 보지 못했다고 합니다. 그림책 작업을 하고부터, 집 주변의 아기 돼지들을 눈여겨보며 그림책 속 주인공으로 끌어들였답니다. 1984년에 첫 그림책을 낸 뒤로 한 해, 한 권씩 꼬박꼬박 펴내온 모든 책의 그림이 에칭(동판화) 기법으로 표현되어 있습니다. 깊고 풍부한 에칭 작품을 만들어내기 위해 그가 사용한 동판만 해도 1000장이 족히 넘습니다. 그리고 그 깊은 맛이 나는 그림에 절묘하게 배어든 유머가 이야기를 만들고 이끌어 갑니다. 이렇게 만들어낸 그림책 가운데,『꼬마 돼지의 불 끄기 대작전』, 『노아의 방주』, 『로마숫자의 비밀 찾기』, 『그림 도둑을 찾아라』 등이 국내에 소개되어 있습니다.
