My 3-year old daughter likes this book a lot and so do I, both the pictures and the simple yet affecting story. It is basically a series of scenes of the little girl playing with her granpa, each accompanied with just a few words spoken, such as a scene where she is playinmg with mudcakes and granpa says \""This is a lovely chocolate ice cream."to which she says "It"s not chocolate, it"s strawberry."\" or another scene--that resonates only too well with real life--where granpa seems peeved and someone, perhaps the girl"s mother off-stage, says \"That was not a nice thing to say to granpa.\" And these scenes are interspersed with scenes of imagination or wistful memory, in a playful and clever way. The illustrations are beautiful, to our eyes anyway they are perhaps somewhat rough or sketchy, but the author"s technique is always fresh, engaging and colorful. (We have 6 or 7 of his books now, this one being the favorite.) The book is quite moving, as you will see. Our 3-year old is delighted with every page of the book, but also seems to, you know, sort of get the deeper drift of it. An excellent book, entertaining, subtle, moving.
