Born out of a question posed to Sís (Play, Mozart, Play!) by his children (Are you a settler, Dad?), the author pairs his remarkable artistry with journal entries, historical context and period photography to create a powerful account of his childhood in Cold War–era Prague. Dense, finely crosshatched black-and-white drawings of parades and red-flagged houses bear stark captions: Public displays of loyalty—compulsory. Children are encouraged to report on their families and fellow students. Parents learn to keep their opinions to themselves. Text along the bottom margin reveals young Sís"s own experience: He didn"t question what he was being told. Then he found out there were things he wasn"t told. The secret police, with tidy suits and pig faces, intrude into every drawing, watching and listening. As Sís grows to manhood, Eastern Europe discovers the Beatles, and the Prague Spring of 1968 promises liberation and freedom. Instead, Soviet tanks roll in, returning the city to its previous restrictive climate. Sís rebels when possible, and in the book"s final spreads, depicts himself in a bicycle, born aloft by wings made from his artwork, flying toward America and freedom, as the Berlin Wall crumbles below. Although some of Sís"s other books have their source in his family"s history, this one gives the adage write what you know biting significance. Younger readers have not yet had a graphic memoir with the power of Maus or Persepolis to call their own, but they do now. Peter Sis는 그림책의 노벨상이라 불리는 칼데콧을 몇 번씩이나 수상한 작가답게 독특한 일러스트로 냉전시대의 아픔의 역사를 담고 있는데요. 예컨대 베를린 장벽이 세워지고 베트남 전쟁이 발발하며 전쟁으로 인해서 제한배급을 위해 줄을 서야 하는 장면까지 냉정하고 섬세한 눈으로 사각의 카툰으로 담아내고 있습니다. 독일 나치의 박해를 겨우 벗어나나 했더니 소련이 점령군으로 들어오고, 그렇게 통제가 시작됩니다. 모든 것이 제한됨에 따라서 탈출자는 기하급수적으로 늘어나고 이를 막기 위해 설치된 ‘철의 장막’은 자유의 반대의미가 됩니다. 또한 가족과 동족이 헤어져야 하는 아픔의 상징이 되기도 하죠. 《The Wall》는 저자 Peter Sis 자신의 경험을 그대로 담아내고 있기에 더욱 절실하게 다가오는데요, 우리나라도 분단의 아픔을 겪고 있기에 책이 주는 의미가 더욱 가슴에 와 닿는 지도 모르겠습니다. 2008년 칼데콧 아너상과 The Robert F. Sibert 논픽션 메달을 수상한 작품 《The Wall》입니다.
